How to Clean and Care for Your Replica Helmet

A wearable replica helmet is built to be worn and shown off, but a little regular care keeps the finish looking sharp, the inside fresh and the electronics working for years. The good news is that it doesn’t take special products or much time. Here’s everything you need to know.

What You’ll Need

  • Two or three soft microfiber cloths (one dry, one for slightly damp cleaning)
  • Clean water
  • A soft brush, like a clean makeup brush or paintbrush, for dust in small gaps
  • A stand or padded box for storage

That’s it. Skip household cleaners, glass sprays, alcohol, solvents and polishes. They can dull, streak or strip painted finishes.

Cleaning the Outside Without Damaging the Finish

  1. Dust first. Wipe the helmet gently with a dry microfiber cloth, following the shape of the panels.
  2. Use a soft brush for gaps. Panel lines, vents and the edges of the faceplate collect dust that a cloth can’t reach.
  3. Spot-clean marks. For fingerprints or smudges, lightly dampen a cloth with water only, wring it out well, and wipe gently. Dry the area straight away with a dry cloth.
  4. Be gentle with weathering. Battle-damage effects and metallic finishes are painted on. Wipe, don’t scrub.
  5. Clean the eye lenses last with a clean, dry cloth, so you don’t move dust from the shell onto them.

Always handle the helmet by its sides or base, not by the faceplate or other moving parts.

Cleaning the Inside and Padding

After a long day of wearing, the inside of a helmet needs a little attention:

  • Air it out. Open the faceplate (if it has one) and leave the helmet somewhere dry and well ventilated for a few hours after wearing.
  • Wipe the padding with a cloth that’s only slightly damp, then let it air-dry completely before closing the helmet or putting it away.
  • Never soak the helmet or the padding, and never put any part of it in a washing machine or dishwasher.

Wearing a fabric mask instead, like our Spider-Man: Brand New Day mask? Fabric masks need different care. Hand-wash them gently and dry them on a head form so they keep their shape.

Caring for the Electronics

Motorized helmets like the MK5 and MK17 Heartbreaker have a faceplate motor, LED eyes and voice control inside. To keep them working:

  • Keep them dry. Water and electronics don’t mix, so don’t wear your helmet in the rain or clean it with anything wet near the eyes, seams or controls.
  • Charge before events so the faceplate and lights work at full strength. [CONFIRM charging method with the team.]
  • Never force the faceplate. If it doesn’t move, check the charge first. Pushing it by hand can damage the gears.
  • Contact support if something stops working. Email support@heroslash.com with your order number and a short video of the issue.

How to Store Your Helmet

  • On a stand or in a padded box, so it can’t roll, tip or get scratched. Our guide to displaying a helmet collection has ideas for every helmet.
  • Somewhere cool and dry, away from radiators, damp rooms and direct sunlight, which can fade paint over time.
  • Not under heavy items. Never stack other things on top of a helmet, even in a box.
  • With the faceplate closed when it’s stored for a while, so dust stays out of the inside.
